Dear Friends,

Last week was an exciting week for me. I was able to go on the monthly food drop to the area where Phila is from, (quite a distance from here). While there, I was able to visit with Phila at the hospital for 4 hours...needless to say I was in heaven. Phila, no longer speaks or understands English. My heart melted as he did recognize me, he was sleeping in a crib with another child when I woke him up...He giggled and smiled and after a little while whispered "Mama Mauweeeen". As you will see in the attached picture Phila is doing very well, has gained all his weight back plus some! I got permission to take him outside and have a picnic with him, you will see him sharing some fruit with me.

I did get to meet with two social workers and the head of nursing about what will happen to Phila now that he is well. He can not continue to live at the hospital, this child has spent 2 1/2 years of his life in this hospital. As you know from the past I have major concerns about Phila going back home, if he does he will surely die, he came very close on the last time he went home for seven weeks. The meeting went very well, the hospital has agreed to set up a meeting on Dec 19 at the hospital. they agreed to get his Gogo, (grandmother) , their staff and myself will meet to see if she will agree to let him be put in a place of safety. God willing, it will be where I am at or someplace close by ... there are no homes for children in the area he comes from. Please keep him in your prayers and pray for God's hand in this. We know He will do what is best for Phila.

I have attached pictures of what a monthly food parcel looks like and also a picture of a local woman from the market area where Phila is from. She and I became friends last year when I made many trips to the hospital to see Phila. Every time she sees me she motions for me to give her my necklace, yes, I give it to her every time. Very unchristian of me, but I now wear necklaces that are not my favorite when visiting that area!

I know you will enjoy the picture of Phila, it is such a miracle to see him looking so healthy after the ordeal of last year.

Thank you for all your encouraging e-mails! I am truly blessed!

Love,
Maureen

Christmas Greetings!
December 14, 2006

The children are now out of school for their summer vacation, the new school year will begin in mid January. The last two weeks have been truly amazing. I had the privilege and opportunity to visit a very small rural clinic located in a very isolated village. The clinic is situated in the middle of a valley where no other services are available. Last week I visited the head nurse there and asked for permission to come this week and hand out baby clothes to mothers in dire need. Mothers walked quite a distance carrying their babies on their back and then waited in line for three hours before I was due to pass out the baby clothes. I wish you could have witnessed the joy on the mother's faces when they saw this was not only baby clothes, but top of the line baby clothes sent by my friend Sandra, she designs them for her company.

Blanket Project -
I just returned from passing out 60 of the blankets to the poorest of the poor. It was a little bit ironic that I picked a day that was 100 degrees to give them out!
Thank you Barbara for the blankets, and thanks to the people that donated the postage money for the blankets to be mailed to South Africa.

Not sure I am able to express to you how honored I feel that you (all the people that support Our Journey in one way or another) allow me the privilege to be
the steward of what you donate to these people in South Africa. I am so thankful for all of you!!!!

Next Tuesday I will be visiting Phila at the hospital again. I have a meeting with his grandmother and social workers. Pray for God's hand in this situation. As I was leaving the hospital two weeks ago I found myself telling the nurse I would bring Christmas presents for all the children in Phila's ward - 90% of them are HIV positive. The words were out of my mouth before I realized what I had promised! It will be a challenge to purchase 60 presents before next Tuesday. Thankfully, I am off this weekend and will have an opportunity to go to the city of Durban to the Internet Cafe and also shop for a few hours.

Christmas Blessings To All
Love,
Maureen

Dear Friends,
This will be a very short journal due to the fact I will be flying home to the states this weekend, my daughter Krissy is having serious complications with her pregnancy and I want to be home with her and Ben during this time. Krissy is 25 weeks pregnant and baby Conner is trying to come into this world way to early. Please keep them in your prayers. I will continue Our Journey journals from home and will more than likely return to South Africa in June.

We not only visited Phila's hospital, we had a great Christmas Party for all the children in his ward, face painting, snacks and presents from Santa. You will see for yourself in the pictures, it was a fun day for everyone.

I did meet with Phila's grandmother and social workers but sad to say not a lot was accomplished. Another meeting is scheduled in January. Someone from here will go in my place, continue to pray for Phila's safety.

Happy Holidays!
Maureen
